My new supervisor is my boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend, and we hate each other. How am I supposed to face her every single day? - Tia, 26 PDF Print E-mail

There’s a reason why you’re hired for the job. Your supervisor’s boss obviously thinks you’re more than competent for the position. Don’t back down from this, and see it as a challenge rather than a problem.

Some dos:

  • Work efficiently and effectively under her authority but make an effort to showcase your abilities to other superiors as well.
  • Get to know your colleagues, even those from different departments.
  • Be humble. Displaying arrogance to a supervisor that already hates you is the last thing you need. Don’t give her any reason to dislike you any more than she already does.
  • Why not befriend her? It could be a situation where the two of you simply don’t know each other. Take the initiative and offer her assistance whenever the opportunity arises.

Some don’ts:

  • Do not put a photo of you and your boyfriend on your desk.
  • If possible, don’t arrange for your boyfriend to pick you up from work.
  • Don’t mention your boyfriend if she doesn’t. Show her you can keep your personal and professional lives separate.
  • Don’t tell your colleagues about the feud between the two of you. You don’t want to seem spiteful.

Good luck!
