I’ve found a job that suits me better, but I’m dreading the exit interview or those chats that my boss and superiors will have with me. What should I say without revealing that I’ve got a new job? Joslyn, 24 PDF Print E-mail

Exit interviews are conducted to find out why a person is leaving, and also to gather data for improving working conditions and retaining employees. However, many are reluctant to speak their mind for fear of repercussion.

Here are some generic answers you can give:

• You need a break to recharge.
• You are thinking of furthering your studies.
• You want to travel the world.

During the exit interview, keep it short and sweet. Don’t burn bridges by moaning about how you hated your supervisor’s style of working. Singapore is a small country, and you’ll never know when you’ll cross paths again.

In addition, don’t forget to be consistent and tell the same story to anyone who asks. The office gossip vine is better connected than you can imagine, and word will travel.
