I’ve been told before by many people that drinking ice-cold water can be bad for girls – is this fact or fiction? – Rachel, 24 PDF Print E-mail

There are plenty of myths and rumors surrounding drinking cold water. Some say that it causes cancer while others say that it can help with weight loss. Find out if the following is true:

Cancer Causing: False
There are plenty emails circulating that warn cold water drinkers that cold water will solidify the food that we eat and convert oil into fat that lines our intestines and causes cancer. This is completely false as there have been no scientific confirmations so put your worries aside the next time you pick up a glass of cold water.

Weight loss: False
It is said that the body requires more energy to raise the temperature of the cold water to that of your body’s temperature thus burning calories. This may be true, but the number of calories you stand to lose is very little. A healthy diet and regular exercise is still the better option.

Causes menstrual cramps: Depends
For some women, cold water, and anything cold, causes their muscles to contract and can worsen cramps. If this happens when your monthly friend pays a visit, switch the cold water with some hot chamomile tea to soothe those cramps.
