I feel irked every time I see someone sweating over gym equipment – what can I do to stay germ-free while at the gym? - Helen, 24 PDF Print E-mail

Health clubs and gyms harbour some of the most contagious germs around, and so it comes as no surprise that the people who frequent them carry a greater risk for contracting infections. That doesn’t mean you should give up exercising though – after all, you’ll benefit more from going to the gym than staying at home. Here’s what you can do to play to safe at the gym.

  1. Sweat can still be easily transmitted through clothing, so be sure that you’ve always got any wounds covered in proper, secure bandages.
  2. Avoid sharing towels, bar soap, shower slippers, yoga mats, or any personal items that come in contact with bare skin.
  3. Wipe down equipment with antibacterial wipes and use a personal towel to protect your bare skin from germs on any equipment
  4. Use antibacterial liquid soap or a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol content to sanitize your hands before and after working out.
  5. Try to avoid letting your bare feet touch wet or dry surfaces. Wear your slippers or shower shoes to keep your feet off communal shower floors, changing rooms and pool deck.
  6. Wash your after workout clothes as soon as possible, preferably with hot water.
