I love being around my colleagues, but somehow the idea of an office party doesn’t really sound like much fun – must I attend? – Teresa, 24 PDF Print E-mail

Maybe you don’t have an outgoing personality or maybe you’d rather be spending your after hours with people you don’t work with, but whatever the reason is, there is probably an even better reason for you to attend than not to. Here’s why:

You’re expected to be there anyway – Even if it's not stated in your invitation, you are usually unoficially expected to be at the party. So think of it a business obligation, one that just requires you to come in a nice dress.

You’ll meet people from other departments – Especially for larger companies, getting to know people from other areas of the party can pay off really well later. You never know when you’ll need favours from someone.

It’s a networking opportunity – Since so many people of all levels of the company hierarchy are congregated in the same room, this is your opportunity to network. This is your chance to introduce yourself to company leaders you don’t normally talk to. This is especially good if you’re eyeing that promotion. Just remember to be smart and engaging while doing it.
